AI Readability for Business: How to Be Found in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google.
Traditional SEO is not enough. Here is how to make sure customers who ask an AI chatbot about your industry actually hear your brand name.

For twenty years, being found meant ranking on Google. That is changing fast. In 2026, a large and growing share of high-value queries never touch a traditional search engine. Prospects ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Google's own AI Overviews, and the answer they receive is the only answer they see.
If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible.
What is AI Readability?
AI Readability, sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), is the practice of structuring your website, brand and content so that Large Language Models (LLMs) can find you, understand you and cite you when a customer asks a relevant question.
It shares DNA with SEO but the target audience is different. Traditional SEO optimises for a keyword-matching algorithm. AI Readability optimises for a model that has read millions of pages and has to decide which brand is authoritative enough to name.
How AI chatbots decide who to mention
Frequency of brand mentions across the wider web
LLMs weight brands that appear repeatedly in trusted contexts: press coverage, industry lists, review platforms, forum discussions, LinkedIn posts. This is closer to PR than SEO.
Structured, unambiguous facts on your own site
Schema.org markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage), clear H1/H2 headings, and question-and-answer content give models a clean signal about who you are.
Direct citation-worthiness
AI systems reward content that is quotable in a sentence: definitive numbers, clear methodology, named experts, dated statistics.
Being present in the training data
The older AI models were trained on a cut-off of the public web. Newer systems use live retrieval (RAG). Both value websites that publish regularly and get linked to.
The 10-step AI Readability checklist we run for clients
- 1
Add Organization + LocalBusiness JSON-LD to the homepage with legal name, alternate names, address, phone, opening hours and services.
- 2
Add Service schema to each service page describing exactly what you do, for whom, in which locations, at what price.
- 3
Add FAQPage schema to pillar content so AI systems can lift questions and answers verbatim.
- 4
Publish a clear "About" page with founder names, dates, milestones and quotable facts. LLMs love biographical anchor points.
- 5
Publish regular editorial content (like this blog) that answers real customer questions, not just keyword-stuffed articles.
- 6
Get brand mentions on high-authority third-party sites: press releases, industry directories, podcast appearances, guest posts.
- 7
Claim and complete every relevant profile: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn Company Page, Apple Business Connect, industry directories.
- 8
Cross-link your own content properly. Internal linking helps LLMs map your topical authority.
- 9
Include statistics and dated numbers wherever possible. "Grew client revenue 34% in six months" is quotable. "Great growth results" is not.
- 10
Monitor citations. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews about your industry each month. See who they mention. Reverse-engineer why.
What does not work
Keyword stuffing
Old SEO tricks actively hurt AI Readability. LLMs recognise unnatural writing and de-rank it.
Thin content pages
A 300-word "SEO page" for every town in the UK is spammed and ignored.
Hidden or invisible text
Any attempt to hide content from users but expose it to bots is filtered out.
AI-written slop without editing
Content generated by AI and published without human editing is increasingly detectable and demoted.
Why Rha built this into our own site
You are reading this on a site that runs schema.org markup, Organization JSON-LD, Article structured data on every blog post, semantic HTML5, a proper sitemap and robots.txt. If we do not eat our own cooking, do not trust us with yours.
Ready to become AI-visible?
We audit your existing site for AI Readability, identify the biggest gaps, and put a 90-day plan in place to close them. The businesses that get ahead in 2026 will be the ones customers hear about inside AI chats, not just in a Google results page.
